LUnderstanding Azure Regions and Availability Zones

What is an Azure Region?

An Azure Region is a specific geographical footprint on the globe that contains at least one, but usually multiple, physical data centers. These data centers are in close proximity to each other and are networked together with a dedicated, regional low-latency network.

Azure has more global regions than any other cloud provider (currently 60+ active regions), allowing enterprises to deploy applications closer to their users to reduce latency and comply with local data residency laws.

Examples of Azure Regions:

  • eastus (Virginia, USA)

  • northeurope (Ireland)

  • centralindia (Pune, India)
